Blazing World Auditions

Rhododendron Theatre

Auditions will be held at 1205 Woodstock Way (the multi-purpose room at Sunset Pond Apartments, adjacent to their main office) on 1/25 from 3-6pm and 1/26 from 4-7pm. Auditions will consist of cold reads of sides taken from the script. The full script will also be provided below if you would like to find 1-2 pages of your choosing to prepare to present along with your cold reads, but this is not required. If you can not make it to either day of auditions but still want to be considered, let us know and we will work something out. After you fill out the form, you will receive an email within a few days with your audition time.

The cast size is 4. 2f and 2any. The characters are:

THE EMPRESS – A young woman from our world who travels to the Blazing World and becomes its absolute ruler.

DUCHESS MARGARET CAVENDISH – The narrator of the story and later the Empress’s close friend and advisor.

FIRST PLAYER – An ensemble role playing half the other characters in the story, including the Emperor of Paradise, Worm-man, the Duke of Newcastle, Lady Fortune, and Fish-man.

SECOND PLAYER – An ensemble role playing the other half of the characters including Bear-man, Bird-man, Fly-man, King Charles II, and the personifications of Prudence and Honesty.

As this is a small-cast show produced by a burgeoning company with minimal production needs, rehearsals will be limited and not held in the venue until the week prior to opening. As a result, the rehearsal schedule will be made up after casting. Rehearsals will only be held once or twice a week through January and February,  then 3 or 4 times a week in March.

The Blazing World is an original adaptation of the 1666 science fiction novella titled The Description of a New World, Called The Blazing World by Duchess Margaret Cavendish. It has been adapted for the stage by RTC artistic director Matthew Balam, who is also directing the production. This is the second stage production of this novella and the first in English. It was produced in Heidelberg, Germany in 2023 as Die Gleissende Welt. Cavendish’s story is one of the first published works of science fiction, predating Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein by over 150 years. It was written principally as a commentary on the biggest scientific discovery in Europe at that time; travel to the other side of the globe. 359 years later, it has arrived for the first time on our hemisphere here in Bellingham.

The play tells the story of a young lady who finds herself stranded in a Polar wasteland and is spirited away by a half-bear half-man to a Utopia hidden on the other side of the globe where all creatures walk and talk like humans and the cities are made of gold and diamonds an there is no war; a place known in our world as Eden, but which the young lady renames the Blazing World when she is crowned as its Empress. The Empress desires to build schools and speak to spirits in order to understand the secrets of the Universe, but when she tries to create her own religion, she is visited by the astrally projected spirit of the author who becomes her closest advisor and friend, and guides her to consider leading a more “poetical and romancical” life, instead of continuing to try to fix a perfect world.

To Whom It May Concern

Read your letter

Are you an IMPROVISER, MUSICIAN or LETTER WRITER who’d love to be involved with a cool, new show coming to The New Prospect Theatre?

First show is SEPTEMBER 22nd

To Whom It May Concern is a live monthly show where folks read their letters on stage. Real letters they’ve written or received, correspondence back and forth, made-up letters they only wish they could write (and send!) and improvised letters based on audience suggestions.

A musician opens the show with a few of their songs and then accompanies the letters improvisationally and the whole shebang is recorded for a podcast.

Time commitment is minimal. There are no rehearsals except for a run thru right before the show.

Individual meetings can be arranged to go over letters and practice reading them out loud.

Visit the website for more information, to listen to past podcasts

(from the shows Los Angeles residency) or to submit!

Puppeteers for Puppet Slam

West OF Roan

Hi friends,

We invite you to submit an act for the Bellingham Puppet Slam, at New Prospect Theater!

We are looking for acts that heavily feature puppetry (including masks) and are ten minutes or less in length.

What is a puppet Slam? Puppet Slams are cabaret-style evenings of puppetry performance for adults (it’s ok if your show is for kids too.) This is an opportunity to try out an idea, explore a story or style of puppetry, share a work in progress or an excerpt. Polished pieces are welcome too. The form is open and full of possibilities: we can’t wait to see what you have!

How much does it pay? We can guarantee a stipend of $50 per act for this slam, and likely more depending on ticket sales! We hope to offer more at this and future puppet slams, and are working on increasing funding to make this a sustainable event. We’ve secured funding from the Puppet Slam Network to cover the cost of theater rental and 10 performer stipends. Contact us about travel reimbursement for out of town performers

How do I apply? Send us an email briefly describing your show or idea, photos or video if you have them (no worries if you don’t).

Please reach out with any and all questions! Nothing is off limits. We are honored to be the seed-tenders of this grassroots arts movement and we look forward to seeing your work!

This is managed by West of Roan – with assistance from New Prospect Theatre

Please go to our contact page and we will forward your info to the company.

Little Lemon Productions

A Creative space for students by students

Beginning in 2018, Little Lemon Productions (LLP), started by Adaryn Healy and Brody Buck, worked to create a safe, creative space for students by students. Our first project showed our student community that we have the ability and power to create meaningful, fun, and beautiful art together. LLP allows students from all schooling and performing backgrounds to learn and grow together. By creating this space, we can ensure all students have an opportunity to shine in many different ways, such as; Directing, Stage Management, Light and Sound work, Set Design, Music Direction, Pit Orchestra Direction and Membership, and many, many more. Adaryn and Brody began this company with the hope that students from all the surrounding areas could have access to theater that is inclusive and empowering. As time has gone on, LLP has continued to expand its team and its student outreach; it regularly has student participants from 3 different school districts and seven different high schools.
