*The Cocoanuts* (1929) is the first Marx Brothers feature film, a musical comedy set during Florida’s 1920s land boom. Groucho plays Mr. Hammer, a struggling hotel owner scheming to sell worthless real estate while dodging creditors. Meanwhile, jewel thieves hatch a plan to steal a wealthy guest’s necklace, and a romantic subplot unfolds between Polly Potter and architect Bob Adams. The film, adapted from the 1925 Broadway musical, features classic Marx Brothers comedy, including the famous “Why a duck?” routine.
One of the earliest sound films, *The Cocoanuts* recorded its musical numbers live rather than pre-recording them. The film showcases the talents of Mary Eaton, Kay Francis, and Margaret Dumont alongside the Marx Brothers.
