SUMMARY:Daniel Handler\, And Then? And Then? What Else? Featuring music by Louis Ledford & Norah McLaughlin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a bold\, candid\, vulnerable\, and entertaining memoir of a literary life by the writer otherwise known as Lemony Snicket. \nPart memoir\, part inspiration for aspiring writers\, And Then? And Then? What Else? traces Daniel Handler’s sometimes challenging and often amusing path toward one of the most spectacularly successful writing careers of the twenty-first century. Declaring his love of strange literature\, Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil in particular\, Handler reflects on the life experiences—some of them deeply personal and revealed for the first time—and the cultural influences that shaped his writing\, both under his own name and as Lemony Snicket\, the lonely\, beleaguered\, somehow both cynical and romantic narrator of the beloved thirteen-volume saga of three unlucky orphans that became one of the best-selling series of all time. Inspiring\, revelatory\, and entertaining\, And Then? And Then? What Else? is destined to become a classic of its genre\, every bit as influential as Eudora Welty’s One Writer’s Beginnings or Stephen King’s On Writing have been on previous generations. \nDaniel Handler is the author of seven novels\, including Why We Broke Up\, We Are Pirates\, All The Dirty Parts and Bottle Grove. His new book on writing And Then? And Then? What Else? is forthcoming from Liverlight/W.W. Norton in 2024. As Lemony Snicket\, he is responsible for numerous books for children\, including the thirteen-volume A Series of Unfortunate Events\, the four-volume All the Wrong Questions\, and The Dark\, which won the Charlotte Zolotow Award. Mr. Snicket’s first book for readers of all ages\, Poison for Breakfast\, was published by Liveright/W.W. Norton in 2021. \nHandler has received commissions from the San Francisco Symphony\, Berkeley Reperatory Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Company\, and has collaborated with artist Maira Kalman on a series of books for the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, and with musicians Stephin Merritt (of the Magnetic Fields)\, Benjamin Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie)\, Colin Meloy (of the Decemberists) and Torquil Campbell (of Stars). \nHis books have sold more than 70 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages\, and have been adapted for film\, stage and television\, including the recent adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events for which he was awarded both the Peabody and the Writers Guild of America awards. \nHe lives in San Francisco with the illustrator Lisa Brown\, to whom he is married and with whom he has collaborated on several books and one son. \nLouis Ledford and Norah McLaughlin specialize in harmony singing not unlike the Everly’s\, Simon and Garfunkle\, or Gram with Emmylou. \nThe songs are by Ledford\, some of his friends as well as choice covers that you or your grandparents have never heard played quite like this before. \nLouis Ledford has written\, recorded and performed music for decades. The verdant fields of Virginia\, the fragrant wards of New Orleans and most recently\, the drizzly climes of Bellingham\, WA have all been home. \nNorah McLaughlin has been performing since she was a Whatcom County Kid in many wonderful bands including Kitty Kitty\, Alamo Social Club and Yogoman Burning Band. \nTickets: 1 Seat/1 copy of And Then? $37 / 2 Seats/1 copy of And Then? $47\nRegistration required! SUMMARY:The Miss Firecracker Contest
DESCRIPTION:The Miss Firecracker Contest – A Reading \nBy Beth Henley \nDirected by Rylan MacDonald \nThe place is the small Mississippi town of Brookhaven\, the time a few days before the Fourth of July. Carnelle Scott (known locally as “Miss Hot Tamale”) is rehearsing furiously for the Miss Firecracker Contest—hoping that a victory will salvage her tarnished reputation and allow her to leave town in a blaze of glory. The unexpected arrival of her cousin Elain\, a former Miss Firecracker winner\, (who has walked out on her rich but boring husband and her two small children) complicates matters a bit\, as does the repeated threat of Elain’s eccentric brother\, Delmount\, (recently released from a mental institution) to sell the family homestead and decamp for New Orleans. But\, aided by a touchingly awkward seamstress named Popeye (who is hopelessly smitten by Delmount) and several other cheerfully nutty characters\, Carnelle perseveres—leading to a denouement of unparalleled hilarity\, compassion and moving lyricism as all concerned finally escape their unhappy pasts and turn hopefully toward what must surely be a better future. \nA long-run Off-Broadway success\, this explosively funny play again demonstrates the author’s unique gift for finding rich lodes of humor—and simple wisdom—in the zany activities of small-town life. \n“THE MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing\, LLC\, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. (www.dramatists.com)” \n“…the evening’s torrential downpour of humor—alternately Southern-Gothic absurdist\, melancholy and broad—almost never subsides.” —The New York Times. \n“…there is a story\, with suspense and conflict—but where it shines is in the imagination of the playwright\, in the characters she has created\, in the strangeness and depth of their emotions\, in the lines written for them to speak\, and in her own astonishing\, humorous vision.” —The New Yorker. \n“It’s a comic volcano of a play\, populated by offbeat\, but vital\, larger-than-life characters…” —The Hollywood Reporter. \n“These are obviously the kinds of roles actors can happily chomp on…” —Time Magazine. \n$10 Individual Tickets: https://newprospecttheatre.thundertix.com/events/228227 \nOR \n$25 BTGSateliteReadings pass is a 3 readings pass good for: \nMay 24th Little Miss Firecracker Contest \nMay 25th Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Two Old Time Radio Shows – LIVE! \nMay 26th More Lasting Than Bronze \nPass Tickets: https://newprospecttheatre.thundertix.com/season_passes/6761/summary \n
