SUMMARY:Uncle Bonsai
DESCRIPTION:In August 1981\, when three Seattle newcomers came together and learned a few songs to busk at the Bumbershoot gates — they made just enough to get into the festival — no one had any idea that they’d be still going strong 43 years later. Now in its 44th year\, Uncle Bonsai returns to Bellingham\, for their first show in almost 10 years\, with a brand new member\, the amazing Kat Bula\, and whole bunch of new songs! (Don’t worry\, you’ll still hear some of your favorites!) And what can you expect? Well\, it’s still an Uncle Bonsai show! You’ll hear songs from their 10 recordings\, a lot of new songs\, and selections from their “Seven Sins\, Seven Wonders\, Seven Dwarfs” song-cycle. \nAnd just what IS Uncle Bonsai? Imagine what might happen if Tim Burton and Edward Gorey hijacked the Andrews Sisters en route to a Stephen Sondheim festival with The Beatles and Tom Lehrer in the sidecar; you’d get Seattle super-harmonizers Uncle Bonsai. With just three voices and an acoustic guitar\, Bonsai presents an often dizzying vocal array of intricate harmony. Their songs\, dark and hilarious at times\, just as often delight with moments of great insight and beauty. The trio aligns itself with the under-achiever\, the dejected\, the outsider\, the black sheep. Densely-packed lyrics fly by in a whir at times\, and take a skewed stance on topics such as first-world problems\, the creation of the universe\, the afterlife\, and\, of course\, holidays with the family. Uncle Bonsai’s acoustic folk-pop songs are almost one-act plays or short stories\, resisting strict pop\, folk\, or singer-songwriter categories. Their songs focus on the passing of time\, the passing of genes\, and the passing of pets – the truth of everything seemingly buried somewhere under the family tree. \n“A folk-pop trio from Seattle\, Uncle Bonsai performs funny original songs whose exquisite musical detail and subtle needling wit attain a level of craft not often seen in pop”  – NY Times \nAdvance tickets $22           https://newprospecttheatre.thundertix.com/events/243409 \n  \nDay of Show tickets $25 available at the door. Doors open at 6:30pm

SUMMARY:Cara Luft
DESCRIPTION:Juno award winning singer-songwriter-musician Cara Luft is that rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth\, yet willing to alter the fabric\, stretch the boundaries and fearlessly bend genres and styles.  A founding member of Canadian folk super-group The Wailin’ Jennys and the brainchild behind Winnipeg’s acclaimed powerhouse duo The Small Glories\, Luft deserves her solid reputation as one of Canadas finest live performers\, armed with amazing tenacity\, vision\, energy and a contagious hilarity. To quote the roots magazine No Depression\, Luft has a rich tradition in folk music  its safe to assume that she knows her stuff  and upon listening it becomes quite clear that she is indeed a formidable songwriter and performer… [The] lovely Ms. Luft sets the bar for the talented few who’ll follow in her footsteps. \nCara has a spirit that drives her to connect with people\, and for this she is loved everywhere she goes. Reviewers of her live shows talk about her compelling vocals\, superb musicianship\, humorous anecdotes\, accomplished songwriting\, ability to switch between styles and the charm of her stage presence. Caras the real deal\, theres nothing pretentious about her. And that sense of honesty\, integrity\, personality and spontaneity permeates both her music and her live shows. Long may she reign! SUMMARY:Public Domain Movies - "Big News"
DESCRIPTION:*Big News* (1929) is a crime-comedy film directed by Gregory La Cava\, following the struggles of Steve Banks\, a newspaper reporter whose drinking habits strain his marriage to fellow journalist Margaret. When Steve is fired\, he becomes entangled in a dangerous investigation into a drug ring. His situation worsens when his editor is murdered\, and he finds himself framed for the crime\, forcing him to fight for his reputation and freedom. \nReleased just weeks before the **Stock Market Crash of 1929**\, which triggered the Great Depression\, the film captures a period of uncertainty and upheaval. Carole Lombard\, credited as “Carol” at the time\, would later become a Hollywood icon. The film survives today in a 16mm reduction print\, preserving its early sound-era charm despite the economic turmoil that followed its release. \nTickets: https://newprospecttheatre.thundertix.com/orders/new?performance_id=3126278
